Surface-Based Body Shape Index (SBSI or SBBSI) calculator

Note: This calculator will not yet give you an explanation of your results.

Summary: The Surface-Based Body Shape Index (SBSI or SBBSI) predicts your all-cause mortality based on your body’s size and shape. It is similar to the popular but limited Body Mass Index (BMI).

This page calculates your SBSI based on four simple measurements of your body.

Take your measurements

1) Height

  • Stand straight without wearing shoes.
  • Measure your height excluding your hair.

2) Weight

  • Weigh yourself without clothing.

3) Waist circumference

  • Stand straight.
  • Place a measuring tape around your trunk right above your hipbones.
  • Make sure the tape is:
    • placed horizontally and not crooked,
    • form-fitting but not compressing your body.
  • Take your measurement while exhaled and without pulling in your stomach.

4) Vertical trunk circumference

  • Stand straight.
  • Place a measuring tape vertically around your trunk going over your shoulder and through your legs.
  • Make sure the tape is:
    • not crooked,
    • form-fitting but not compressing your body.
  • Take your measurement.
